Harry Kane’s comedy sketch alongside Jonny Wilkinson goes viral after French media mock the star

Harry Kane filmed a comedy sketch for charity in which the England captain was taught how to sky a penalty by rugby hero Jonny Wilkinson… now French media have made it go viral by mocking his missed key spot-kick in World Cup clash

  • A 2018 comedy sketch has gone viral showing Harry Kane missing a penalty
  • The Sport Relief video showed Kane alongside Jonny Wilkinson and John Bishop
  • Kane was taught how to shoot his penalty over the bar by the rugby hero
  • Similarities have now been drawn between the video and Kane’s World Cup miss
  • The England captain missed from the spot against France during Saturday’s loss

If Harry Kane wasn’t feeling glum enough about missing a penalty against France that ultimately decided England’s World Cup exit on Saturday, then the Three Lions skipper will want to look away now after footage emerged foreshadowing his startling miss.

Kane had already scored once from the spot, beating Spurs teammate and France captain Hugo Lloris in the 54th minute to level the game after Aurélien Tchouaméni put Les Blues in front.

That strike saw Kane level Wayne Rooney as England’s all-time top goalscorer on 53 goals. He would’ve become the new national team record-holder if he had scored his second penalty.

In an almost identical situation with the match entering it’s closing moments after Mason Mount was bundled to the ground by Theo Hernandez, Kane failed to take the chance as England’s hopes slipped away.

The 29-year-old skied his powerful strike over the bar with England unable to find their way back into the match as France eliminated them from the competition.

However, Kane’s now-infamous miss in fact wasn’t the first time the Spurs striker has blasted a penalty over the bar after a charity comedy appearance featuring the Three Lions star, England rugby hero Jonny Wilkinson, and comic John Bishop appeared in the wake of England’s defeat.

The 2018 Sports Relief sketch showed Kane appearing alongside England’s Rugby World Cup winning hero Wilkinson as the duo debated how to take a penalty.

England’s joint-record goalscorer slotted his first effort into the corner, whereas Wilkinson took out a kicking tee and booted the ball over the bar to simulate a conversion and joked the footballer had ‘got it all wrong’.

Kane then retakes his effort an in almost picture-perfect replication of his harrowing miss against France as his effort sails off into the distance over the crossbar.

French media were first to draw attention to the video as they gloated at England’s quarter-final elimination, with the reigning world champions advancing to a semi-final match against underdogs Morocco.

Former French rugby player Jean-Baptiste Gobelet tweeted: ‘Thanks Jonny Wilkinson for this masterclass kicking. Love my England friend.’
