The championship winning Katy High School football teams have long seen their titles emblazoned on the downtown water tower. Now, thanks to a grassroots push from the Katy community, the Katy High School 2015 and 2019 softball champs will be given a place of honor alongside the victorious football teams.
On Sept. 8, Mayor Bill Hastings, city administrator Byron Hebert and members of Katy city council gathered at the base of the water tower to celebrate the painting of the two Lady Tigers Softball teams’ names on the tower.
After each winning championship, the Katy football team raised money to have the team’s year added, said Katy city council member Chris Harris.
While it was never tradition to add other winning teams to the water tower, city officials told parents of the softball players that they, too, could have their names on the water tower if they raised the money as well.
“The city had all long said that if the money was raised, (the city would) put (the championship) up on the water tower,” Harris explained. “And so that’s what they did.”
The effort was spearheaded by the mother of a 2015 softball champion, Harris said. “I really have to give her all the credit, because she kept this at the forefront for all these years and really organized the entire thing,” he said.
Harris praised the decision to include the softball teams to the water tower, noting that football, while popular at the school, is only one of many sports.
“I’m proud of Katy High School. Everybody says we’re a football school, but we’re competitive in all sports,” he said, “It’s a well-rounded school, it’s a great campus, and we’re competitive in not just football but all sports as well.”
