Anne Arundel County Public School athletes can now feel safer when they take the field thanks to a new lightning detection system.

The new lightning detection system, installed at 13 different high schools, will now detect lightning within 8 miles of campus.

Once it senses the storm, a horn will sound and strobe lights will be activated to alert people to head indoors.

The school system said all outdoor games and activities will then be suspended for at least 30 minutes, and after that, three horn alerts will let players and coaches know it is safe to return to play.

Officials with the school said they will now no longer have to rely on coaches and referees to make that decision.
