The PGA Tour Unveils an Augmented Reality App Developed by Quintar
The PGA Tour is releasing a free augmented reality app for fans attending the three FedEx Cup Playoff tournaments. Starting with The Northern Trust today in Jersey City, N.J., the app lets fans track the action on a designated hole with advanced data and a prediction game.
Utilizing the Q.reality AR platform developed by startup Quintar, PGA Tour AR will link an iOS device to the course and offer ShotLink data, including shot trails on the tee box, ball and player indicator cards, distances to pin, and interactive, topographical 3D models of the greens.
The AR features will be available on a par 3 at each course: No. 14 at Liberty National Golf Club for The Northern Trust; No. 17 at Caves Valley Golf Course at the BMW Championship; and No. 15 at East Lake Golf Club for the season-ending Tour Championship.
The app will enable sharing AR screenshots to social media and also challenge users to try the Par-3 Player Picks game, in which they earn points based on how a chosen golfer fares on the hole.
Quintar was founded earlier this year; its executive team features veterans of Intel Sports, Voke, Magic Leap, Sportvision and Turner Sports, among other industry leaders. SeventySix Capital led its seed investment round.
